(c)Patrick McDonnell MUTTS TM
McDonnell was born on March 17, 1956. A native of New Jersey, he attended The School of Visual Arts in New York City on scholarship, and graduated with a BFA in 1978. After a very successful career as a freelance illustrator, in 1994 McDonnell created the comic strip Mutts, which appears in over 20 countries, and the Mutts cartoons have been published in many books throughout the world. "Mutts" is centered on the unlikely friendship of Earl, the dog, and Mooch, the cat. It's about the simple joy of being in the moment, and sharing our planet with all creatures. McDonnell relates "I've been living with these characters for a long time, and telling stories with words and pictures even longer."

In 2005, McDonnell embarked on a children's book career. His first children's book, which featured the MUTTS characters, The Gift of Nothing, quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Art (2006), his second release, told the story of a boy named Art who makes art. His next release, Just Like Heaven (2006), heralding the joys of simple blessings, was hailed in a starred review by Kirkus as "a meditation on the true nature of miracles". In 2007 McDonnell again returned to the New York Times bestseller list with Hug Time, featuring a kitten named Jules who goes around the world hugging endangered species. His fifth children's book, South, was released in the Fall of 2008. His latest children's book, Wag, was published in 2009.
